Locke = Kurtz? Will the Boy with the Prettiest Eyes, AKA Combover McSisterfucker, become second-in-command of his Crazy Army? I don't care, Locke's still my favorite.
(Previous Locke discussion here.)
Posted by Jim Treacher at January 12, 2005 10:56 PMI hope Terry O'Quinn never receives an emmy or an oscar, getting him better parts and flaming him out and instead stays the incredible under-the-radar character actor he is so that when you see a cast list for a show and he's on it, you know at least some part of it will be good.
you know he was a gold gloves boxer in his younger days?
Posted by: albo at January 13, 2005 06:40 AMI was overwhelmed with relief to find that the "[p]revious Locke discussion" didn't center on property rights and economic theory.
Posted by: Hubris at January 13, 2005 10:15 AMBut Jim, will he continue to play string-puller for each character, helping them to see their innermost desires/fears, or will he really become the leader of either the white or black tribe? Lots of folks seem to think they will split up, a la "The Stand", but I have my doubts. I think Locke has recognized the island for what it can do or show, and is helping others to see it to.
I realize this post has contributed nothing, so I will now shut up.
Posted by: Rob at January 13, 2005 11:16 AMHey, between the quasi-incestual wuvving of Shannon and Boone, and the WTF "Is this because I'm a lesbian" question of Serena on "Law & Order: Original Recipe" last night, my head's still spinning.
Posted by: Percy Dovetonsils at January 13, 2005 12:07 PMKurtz or Carlos Castaneda's Don Juan? Helping everyone to See What They Need To Know? Either way, I hope they stop pretending to kill people.
Posted by: Joe Detweiler at January 13, 2005 12:11 PMBoone fucked his STEPsister, Jim, not his sister. What do you think he is, some kind of pervert?
Posted by: Damian P. at January 13, 2005 12:45 PMMaybe I misunderstood something (and I've missed parts of various episodes), but during his flashback/backstory didn't Locke get a phone call at the office from someone calling him Colonel, or something like that? It implied that he was really undercover at the box company and was involved in some sort of CIA type work. In any case he and Sayid are the two most interesting characters in this show so far. I never get caught up in television, ever, but this show has hooked me.
Posted by: DanG at January 13, 2005 02:39 PMThat was his gamer buddy calling him "Colonel." The "rendezvous at 1300 hours" was them meeting at lunch to play Risk or whatever. It was a fakeout to make the viewer think Locke was a big shot in his previous life, when in reality [camera zooms out] he worked for a box company and had a dicky Dave Grohl lookalike for a boss.
Posted by: Jim Treacher at January 13, 2005 02:45 PMI think his line to Boone McSisterfucker (great name, Treach) about "choosing sides" implies that at least in Locke's mind, there's going to be a split between those who "get the island" and those who want to get off the island. Locke's obviously picking his groupies and "saving them" for the eventuality.
Then Charlie Sheen will be sent into the island to find him and the crazy lady from Babylon 5.
Posted by: Paul at January 13, 2005 04:34 PMForget this metaphysical shit. I still can't figure out why Kiefer held up the Quik-E-Mart, instead of just slashing the tires on Osama Bin Lexus' car.
Posted by: COOP at January 13, 2005 06:10 PMLocke is so David Koresh. He means well, he's probably not leading well, but I'd still follow him to Joan Rivers' house for sex if he said it was OK.
Posted by: Jason at January 13, 2005 07:07 PMYeah, but Koresh looked like the D&D geek to end all D&D geeks. The true mystery of the Branch Davidians is how someone who looked like that managed to not only get people to buy his bullshit, but convince those chicks that he was Jesus and they needed to fuck him for salvation. Inspired, I briefly considered starting a cult to get a lot of ass, but decided against it because they'd eventually want the apocalypse to finally arrive and I couldn't think of an appropriate exit strategy that didn't involve dying.
Locke, on the other hand, is a virile bald man who can kill living things with his knife when he's not doing the Shaman thing, plus he's convinced Merry to follow him to the Crack of Doom if it came to that.
From what I see, there's three distinct groups forming, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. You have Locke's group, who's main advantage is a man who's figured out the secret of the island and can apparently control the weather, but the loyal group is small and consists of a kid, a former heroin addict who's easily manipulated, and a sister-fucker who's easy to beat-up.
The second group is a nebulous affair consisting of Sayid, Bikini Girl, Hurley, Jack, Guy from Matrix, and Sun. They have guns, but they have no organization and none of them trust each other. Unlike Locke's group, who follow the Chief/Brave model, this second group is a bunch of individuals that share a common interest from time to time, namely Bikini Girl.
The third group consists of Sawyer. Like an Ent, nobody's on his side, so he's on nobody's side. He's convicned everyone that he's a selfish badass, even though he's never refused a request for an item he posesses. He just gives people a hard time because they never ask nicely. On the other hand, people don't mind torturing and mocking him for no reason other than they have an irrational loathing of him.
The fourth group are extras of the week who exist in case the writers want to kill somebody for real.

I was hoping he'd get in line ahead of the guy, buy a bunch of stuff, and pay with a check. "Oh, you need to see my ID? Wait a sec, where did I put that..." Etc. Less dramatic, I suppose.
Posted by: Jim Treacher at January 14, 2005 12:08 AMWhat bothers me is that O'Quinn played a charcter named Adm. Boone on JAG, so whenever I hear Boone, I think of the wrong guy.
Posted by: Dave Ruddell at January 14, 2005 09:28 AMI'm the same way when Jack talks about Charlie...
Posted by: Jim Treacher at January 14, 2005 12:58 PM"Guy from Matrix"
Guy From Angel. Or, Guy Briefly From 24, Guy Even More Briefly from Enterprise, or Guy On That Babylon 5 Spinoff That No One Ever Remembers Even Though TNT Tried To Make A Big Deal Of It Before It Fell Flat.
Guy From Matrix was someone else entirely.
Posted by: Jason at January 14, 2005 11:42 PMJust for grins and giggles, my theory about Locke is that he is a disabled Special Forces/SEAL type, who had the crappy box-factory job as a way of eking out a small pension... he just seems too competant to have been some wierd war-gamer wannabe. Someone used to working with a small group of other competant professionals, not hand-holding a bunch of feebs.
Posted by: Sgt. Mom at January 15, 2005 03:10 PMSgt Mom - I was thinking the same thing about Locke.
Paul - Group Four should be called the Red Shirts in honor Star Trek dead crew members . Should the "Others" on the island have their own group(s) ?
