Sin City

marv.JPGI'm torn on this one, folks. I liked it a lot, and yet I agree with the reviews that say it's too long and too much of the same thing over and over. They tried to squeeze 5-odd years of Frank Miller's id into 2 hours, and they really did do it as faithfully as possible, but maybe that's the problem.

However, it didn't give me a damn headache like Sky Captain, and it had 100% more Carla Gugino's ass. It's an amazing technical achievement, Mickey Rourke gave his most entertaining performance since Point Blank, the Frodo-Fu was awesome, and Jessica Alba proved that even though she was totally outacted by the girl who played the younger version of her character, she's a lot better at filling out a pair of chaps. Oh, and Nicky Katt stole the show again, just like he did in The Limey.

After the last two Robocop movies and the Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot mess, I'm glad Frank Miller is finally getting his due in Hollywood. Just in time, too, because it's not like he's getting any better at drawing. The last Frank Miller comic I read looked like he'd scratched it out with a burnt cork while driving.

If you want to read some stuff by people who actually put some thought into it, Tom Spurgeon has the full Sin City link roundup.

I LOVED the Mickey Rourke story but didnt enjoy the 3rd story for many reasons, one of them being brittany murphy. ugh. Somebody should get fired for casting her in that role.

I think if you have no prior knowledge of the comic book, like myself, you get more enjoyment out of Sin City.

I'm with you on that one, Treacher. I mean, did DK2 suck or what?

Nicky Katt, you say? Well well well, this sounds promising...

The movie was oddly repetetive, even having the same lines told over and over("I counted the term "bad ticker" three times, for instance).

I'm glad someone else had an ambivalent reaction to it: it seemed like a movie I should have liked more.
But I'm sorry to say everyone except Mickey Rourke sounded like they were reading a script at bad times.

I dunno who Brittany Murphy is or anything, but the one girl who will be haunting my dreams will be the 19 year old girl Nancy, that's for damned sure. Holy mother o' jeebus, that's a well put together woman.

If you were wondering what part Nicky Katt played, as I did, he's the guy working for the mob with the Swatzika on his forehead who gets shot by the arrows.

I think certain lines of dialogue were repeated for a foreshadowing effect.

I found the film repetitive, in a way that struck me as strange. The same lines occurred over and over. ("Bad ticker"? I heard it three times. That's right, I counted.)

It seemed like a movie I should have liked more, so it's a relief that someone else seemed ambivalent about it. Mickey Roarke was good, but everyone else sounded like they were reading a good script on a bad day.

The one girl who haunts my dreams for damned sure is the teenage Nancy. Is that Brittany Murphy? I dunno. Mary-mother-of-God, that's one finely wrought woman.
